One mourner from Myene confirmed dead, 16 ‘severely injured’

The Friday road accident left one person dead and 16 ‘severely injured’ in Omoro district.

Omoro—21 November 2020: A serious road accident along Bobi-Lira road via Awoo Bridge in Omoro district has left a female adult dead on Friday afternoon.

The incident happened at around 12pm. The deceased, those injured and survivors were mourners being transported by a tipper lorry with the registration number UAW 267R.

They were going for a burial in Lakwana sub-county Omoro district—survivors and eyewitness told this publication.

According to an eyewitness, the cause of accident was due to over speeding and overloading of passengers.

“There were over 20 passengers on board and after reaching near Awoo Bridge, the vehicle overturned two times after the driver lost control approaching the bridge,” one passenger said.

“16 people got serious injuries, and they were driven to Lacor Hospital in Gulu for medical treatment while the deceased body was taken to Gulu Regional Referral Hospital for post-mortem,” he added.

A traffic police officer attached to Omoro central police station who preferred not to be named, also said “the accident was due to over speeding and reckless driving”.

“We are still conducting investigations over the matter,” he added.

The mourners were for Amwa parish in Myene sub-county Oyam district. Traffic police chief told TND News the driver was being sought after taking off.
