Panic at Lira district headquarters as senior staff test positive for Covid-19

Lira—7, September 2020: Lira district chambers (headquarters) could be closed briefly for disinfection after a senior staff attached to the Office of the District Chairman Hon. Patrick Alex Oremo Alot tested positive for the novel coronavirus (Covid-19).

It is now confirmed that a female secretary to the district chairman was admitted at Covid-19 treatment center at Lira Regional Referral Hospital after she tested positive for the deadly virus.

When contacted for comments Monday afternoon, Alex Oremo Alot confirmed that his secretary indeed tested positive for Covid-19 and said as a precautionary measure, he (Oremo) is now working from home.

According to the chairman, he has now instructed the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Ben Ogwete Otim to assure strict adherence to the Standard Operating Procurers (SOPs) such as wearing of face masks, hand washing and the use of hand sanitizers to ensure that other district staff are safe.

This comes just a day after four staff of Lira Regional Referral Hospital tested positive of the virus. A renowned medical doctor who was attached to the Lira City based government referral hospital, also died of the virus, the Ministry of Health confirmed his death on Sunday.

“The Ministry commiserates with the staff of Lira Hospital and the entire medical fraternity on this untimely death. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” a statement from the health minister reads in part.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health has also clarified on the alleged closure of Lira Regional Referral Hospital because of the Covid-19.

On Sunday, there was social media report that the hospital was closed to public following the death of a medical doctor as a result of Covid-19.

But according to Emmanuel Aineebyona, the Senior Public Relations Officer in the Ministry of Health, the hospital is open to the public save for the theatre where two health workers tested positive for the virus.

The Health Ministry further clarified that four health workers were confirmed for Covid-19 at Lira RRH.

Of the four, two works in the operating theatre. The theatre has since been temporarily closed for disinfection and contact tracing.

All other health services remain open to the public with strict adherence to SOPs, a statement from the Ministry of Health reads on Sunday.
