Bujumbura—9, June 2020: Burundi’s President Pierre Nkurunziza, aged 55, has died after suffering a cardiac arrest, the government says.
A government statement says that he was admitted to hospital on Saturday after feeling unwell—reports BBC.
His condition then improved but on Monday he had a cardiac arrest and efforts to revive him were unsuccessful.
Mr Nkurunziza was due to step down from the Presidency in August after 15 years in power.
On May 20, retired army general Evariste Ndayishimiye was elected the new President of Burundi. The controversial election marked the country’s first competitive presidential election since 1993.
According to jurist.org, Ndayishimiye won the election with 69 percent of the votes. However, Agathon Rwasa, who supposedly won 24 percent of the votes, filed a complaint claiming that Ndayishimiye’s party had committed electoral fraud.
