Gulu—5, June 2020: The Resident District Commissioner [RDC] Gulu Maj Santos Okot Lapolo on Wednesday launched a tea [farming] project for Acholi sub-region.
The RDC and The Edwin Foundation Tea Initiative [EFOTI Limited] director, Mr Edwin Atukunda Beekunda and other few people had the scientific launch because of government’s restriction on huge gathering as a measure to control wide spread of Covid-19.
“On behalf of the government of Uganda and on my own behalf, I want to appreciate this tea farmer who’s introducing tea in Acholi to fight poverty. God help me, help him, and help the propagator of wealth creation for God and my Country, Amen,” RDC Maj Lapolo said.
“Edwin, May the Good Lord help you so you change Acholi people,” he added.
EFOTI Limited, with support from Uganda Prisons Service [UPS] has established a tea nursery bed [demonstration farm] at Lugore government prison in Gulu district.
Mr Atukunda says the Lugore demo garden is currently acting as a training center for Acholi sub-region, besides another demo garden in Zombo district.
According to Mr Atukunda, the people of Gulu and Acholi sub-region should embrace tea farming just like their brothers and sisters in West Nile sub-region.
Currently, there are over 500 committed tea farmers in Zombo district alone. Before EFOTI Limited’s intervention, there were less than 50 serious tea farmers in Zombo.
Mr Atukunda has been in West Nile for less than a year, but his intervention within a short time has been commended by both religious, political and cultural leaders.

Acholi cultural leadership welcomes tea project
The Ker Kwaro Acholi [Acholi Kingdom] has welcomed tea project with a promise to support the EFOTI Limited.
This follows Mr Atukunda’s visit to the Ker Kwaro Acholi Headquarters [Gang Kal Madit] early this week.
Ms Akot Kortina, the Executive Director, Northern Uganda Tourism Cluster, accompanied the EFOTI Limited director. She’s also the Coordinator Miss Tourism Northern Uganda.
The meeting was chaired by the Ker Kwaro Acholi Prime Minister, Mr Ambrose Olaa before he delegated a team from Gang Kal Madit to move with the visitors to Lugore tea demo garden.
“…..we will start small, from maybe a sub county or two in East & West Acholi by identifying interested parties and developing the nursery operators to raise the seedlings for both individual and Farmers’ Groups plantings and processing,” reads a commitment from Ker Kwaro Acholi
