Kampala—3, June 2020: Because of novel coronavirus disease [Covid-19] presence in Uganda and world over, the Uganda Martyrs Day celebrations for this year at Namugongo was held “scientifically” with not more than 100 celebrants converging at both Anglican and Catholic shrines, respectively.
The rest of the country followed the celebrations live on radios and televisions.
“Because of Covid-19 pandemic threats, this year’s celebrations are being held scientifically with a few guests so as to have the maximum social distancing, limited movements and close monitoring or surveillance of the limited celebrants,” UPC party said in her press release dated 3 June 2020.
The opposition political party also extended its deeper sense of appreciation, solidarity and brotherhood as we hold Martyrs Day celebrations.
UPC’s national chairman, Mr Okae Lawrence, says it is indeed back to the symbolism of our Martyrs; as Covid-19 has greatly humbled us before God.

“…. forced us to reflect upon ourselves and our daily lives, and imposed very difficult and tough conditions that have made us abandon some of our cultures and usual lifestyles that were full of material goods and services, foods and drinks,” UPC national chair added.
He added that we have been kept in our homes “which has hugely helped us to renew our family ties and faith.” “This is bringing freshness in our hearts and society that is important for prosperity and our well-being.”
According to Mr Okae, UPC is encouraging us to use Martyrs Day celebrations as part of a renewal of our faith, hope, love and pray for our nation and the entire world to overcome the huge challenges Covid-19 pandemic and lockdown have imposed against humanity.
“Remember to isolate, distance and sanitise at all times,” he urged Ugandans.
