Lira—May 28, 2020: At least 108 sex workers doing body transaction within Lira Municipality will receive different support from President Yoweri Museveni, soon.

TND News has exclusively been told that the beneficiaries whose total numbers could rise, on hearing “fat-brown-envelope”, have swiftly started “come and register with us appeal”.

Besides names registration, they are also discussing among others: what ventures might be profitable for them and their management structure.

“We have chosen to be organised and we want fruitful transition; one that will not make us think about turning back,” one of the sex workers told this publication.

She added: “Last month, I was among those who received posho, beans and a packet of salt. This was a brief term intervention but worthy.”

Asked what venture [s] they are likely to agree on, she stated: “tailoring and garment cutting, bakery and salon.”

Speaking on condition of anonymity, she added that they will soon meet Hon Sam Engola, the Lira district NRM Chairperson to hand over their request. Mr Engola also doubles as NRM national vice chairperson in charge of northern Uganda.

Nearly three weeks ago, Mr Engola was the main guest at a function in which they gave sex workers, posho, beans and salt by Lira district COVID-19 task-force.

Addressing the beneficiaries, Mr Engola says it shocked him to see real sex workers in Lira town.

“My tears wanted to come after your chairperson said you have been given a wrong name. I didn’t know that the name existed in Lango. But because she has spoken and I’m seeing you all here, I’m feeling sad; I am seeing young girls who should be doing the many available jobs…..” he added.

He added: “Now I’m seeing it is there and we are thinking how to come back to you after coronavirus is gone and discuss properly with you what we can do for you.”

The NRM boss soon promised to carry the problem facing Lira sex workers to President Museveni for support.

Whereas he promised this may happen after coronavirus is defeated, this contemporary digital publication has been told that Museveni’s “fat-brown-envelope” could arrive soon.

“We are certain our request is not far away from arriving. We are working on our proposals day and night. Hopefully next week we can meet Hon Sam Engola to guide us,” one key promoter reveals.

Mr Sam Engola has not been accessible to give TND News any update and if he has already alerted the President.

Last week, Lira RDC Milton Odongo offered free transport to each sex worker to go back to their respective villages and do farming. They have all refused going back.

President Museveni has funded several youth projects, including supporting sex workers within Kampala. For sex workers, many of them are now tailors and bakers, among others.
