Uganda’s popular activist, a scholar and a novelist has been arrested alongside event promoter, Andrew Mukasa aka Bajjo and many others.
Dr Stella Nyanzi, a former Makerere University lecturer and her fellow marchers were arrested on Monday morning and driven to an unknown destination.
They were arrested near Buganda Road Court as they proceed to the Office of the Prime Minister to demand for COVID-19 food relief.
On Sunday evening, Dr Nyanzi posted on Facebook that they would march on Monday. They are protesting manner in which relief food are being distributed to residents in Kampala, and other districts.
“WE NEED FOOD” protest march in Kampala
“Tomorrow morning, I am walking with Nana Mwafrika Mbarikiwa and our children from our homes to the Office of the Prime Minister for a lunch date. We are going with our empty sauce pans to tell him we have no food to feed our households. We are concerned about the hunger afflicting households around us!”
“Please join us in the Food Protest, if you agree that the COVID-19 presidential directives have left you poor and without food in your kitchens. Please come and march for poor Ugandans whose non-essential services were shut down, leaving them without food.”
Before their arrest on Monday morning, she wrote again:
FOOD PROTESTERS’ PETITION
I am marching today through Kampala city with my empty sauce pans and my hungry children, in protest against the HUNGER PANDEMIC spreading all over Uganda during the Covid-19 lockdown. I am marching with my sister-comrade Nana Mbarikiwa and her children.
“We are taking a petition to the Prime Minister who is the head of the Covid-19 task force. We are going on a lunch date with Dr. Ruhukana Rugunda. We hope he will fill our empty sauce pans and cooking pots with good things. Please join us as we march through the city with our pots and pans. Please join us as we resist the evils born out of the Covid-19 lockdown in Uganda. Please come and march for the hungry, the starving, the dying, the locked in vulnerable.”
