IGAR Uganda Ltd, one of the leading companies dealing in petroleum products and hospitality in Busoga and Buganda sub-regions has put aside shillings 50m to purchase foodstuffs for distribution to the most vulnerable people in the district.
The beneficiaries will be those affected by the fast spreading COVID-19 pandemic that has killed 311,588 people as of May 17, 2020, according to a data from European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control
This was announced by Issa Warsame, one of the company directors, while handing over the first batch of first class maize flour to the Jinja district COVID-19 task-force.
Mr Warsame says besides the 2 tons of maize flour, the group will in the next few days donate more to the people in Jinja, Mukono, Wakiso and Kampala where they have investments.
During the holy month of Ramadan which kicked off Friday 24 April 2020, Warsame says they are also distributing sugar and other assorted food items to help the underprivileged believers sustain themselves during the fasting period.
“We have always done so in past years, but this year is unique because of this fast spreading pandemic that has paralysed the entire universe…” Warsame who was flanked by his co-director, Mr Ali Bashir remarked.
Faisal Kirunda the head of Jinja district task force logistics who received the donation on behalf of the task force chairman, embattled RDC Eric Joseph Sakwa applauded Igar Uganda Ltd for the gesture.
Kirunda urged other corporate bodies and individuals to emulate, saying the needs are immense compared to donations that are now coming in bits.
He also noted that while supply of maize flour is fairly regular, very few companies and individuals have donated beans, and that at the moment they do not even have a single kilogramme.
Kirunda further used the occasion to caution some people who are trekking their homes to the logistics stores in search of food, saying they will not be given anything unless they wait patiently from their homes.
Other notable organisations and institutions that have contributed to the task force include Busoga Kingdom. The Kingdom gave out relief worth shs200m to all the 11 districts that form the traditional Busoga,
Hared Petroleum Uganda Ltd and Bidco Uganda Ltd (BUL), among others, have also donated.
The Busoga Relief Campaign is being spearheaded by the wealthy and amiable Noor Ahmed Osman who also doubles as the Second Deputy Prime Minister (Katukiro) in the Kingdom while Mathew Kuor the Chief Finance Officer represented BUL and Abdulkadir stood for Hared.
