COVID-19: Uganda’s 54 cases, 747 deaths in Africa

Ministry of Health on Sunday evening confirmed one new case of COVID-19.

“Out of 169 samples tested today at Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI) one tested positive,” Ministry of Health says.

The total number of confirmed cases now at 54. Three who recovered from the virus have been discharged.

So far, 4 patients have recovered and been discharged from Entebbe Grade B Hospital on 11/04/2020 following recovery from COVID-19.

A data from Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention [ACDCP], reveals 669 more COVID-19 cases in Africa were registered in 12 hours.

ACDCP also says some 34 deaths were noted across continent in 24 hours. Another 669 new coronavirus cases were confirmed in Africa in a span of 12 hours on Sunday.

The continent now has a total of 13,814 cases – a data from Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, further, shows. 

This showed a substantial increase in the last 12 hours as 445 new cases were confirmed earlier Sunday. 

In an update, the ACDCP said 47 people had died of coronavirus-related sicknesses in that period, bringing the total to 747. 

Recoveries, meanwhile, stood at 2,355 across the continent, up from 2,171. 

African governments have introduced numerous measures to curtail the spread of the virus, including closing schools, imposing travel restrictions, and prohibiting large gatherings. 

In Uganda, an extension to the current lockdown is highly expected. According to a government spokesperson, Ofwono Opondo, extension will be based on the recommendations by the national COVID-19 taskforce and the cabinet, who are meeting tomorrow.

The following is data on the spread of coronavirus in Africa’s five regions: 

  1. North Africa saw 6,098 cases with 564 deaths, with Egypt and Algeria the worst-hit countries in the region.
  2. West Africa saw 3,106 cases with 82 deaths.
  3.  Southern Africa saw 2,180 cases with 35 deaths.
  4. Central Africa saw 1,229 cases with 38 deaths. 
  5.  East Africa saw 1,201 cases with 28 deaths.

In Africa, 52 countries are battling with COVID-19 – out of total 54.
