COVID -19 exclusive: What Ugandans should expect from Museveni’s Sunday address

Kampala – In his third address to the nation on Sunday evening, President Museveni is expected to issue new directives, in addition to several he issued on Wednesday and Saturday, respectively.

The Head of State will also, as a top principal of the country, confirm to Ugandans first case of coronavirus– announced by Dr Ruth Aceng, Health Minister on Sunday morning.

“He reportedly returned to Uganda on March 21, 2020 at around 2am aboard Ethiopian airlines,” she told the nation.

“During the screening process at Entebbe Airport, his temperature was said to be at 38.7,” the Minister added – in her statement.

Reliable sources who spoke to TND News on Sunday morning and afternoon and asked not to be named, revealed that in the third President’s directives, new measures have been taken in a bid to combat more infections and spread in many parts of the country.

One source told us that the President has directed security heads to deploy personnel to different public places, which in his Wednesday directives were banned from holding gatherings. These places are; churches, mosques, learning institutions, bars, among others.

“The President has been notified that some people are violating directives and yet this is one of the best ways to prevent the coronavirus pandemic. He has taken stringent measures as the Commander In Chief and in his address today, such public places will be manned by security team with heavy deployment across the country,” he told us.

The source further reveals that there will also be heavy security patrol in major towns, starting later today with the Kampala Metropolitan.

He added that both LDUs, police and the army will take charge – for the next 30 days.

Another directive is that the President, as per our sources, will announce total veto on all inland travels, except for health officials on rescue missions.

However, he added that the inland travels may be given shorter period before complete shutdown to allow those already at different bus and taxi parks to continue with their journeys.

This, our source said will be based on ministry of health’s inspection and advice to the commanding security officer [s] in charge of bus and taxi parks.

TND News has also learnt that the President is expected to direct the immediate closure of all public and private places of works, with exception to health centres, hospitals and clinics, across the country.

Workers, both in private and government institutions [MDAs] will be directed to work from their homes, TND News has further been told.

Uganda’s borders with neighbouring countries are also expected to be closed with heavy security presence.

Institutions not to be affected by the new directives or closed for now, are: State House, Ministry of Health, prisons, police stations and army barracks. However, there will be limited access to these places [institutions] for the next one month.

Shopping malls, arcades and markets are also expected to be closed.
