Police on Saturday took over different roads in Omoro town after protest from a group of youth and business communities emerged.
It arose after Omoro town council authorities relocated traders to the new market side of Opit market.
However, the business people were not interested to go and operate their businesses at the new market side claiming that it is lacking shelters, toilets, water and stalls.
Traders also claim that the whole area is the hiding place for khat (marujwana) smokers and wrong people.
A group of youth led by a man called “Mr. AJUGA The Man” arrived and blocked the highway and other roads and were forcing and diverting traders from Gulu and Lira to go and operate their business in the new market side.
After forcing traders from Lira and Gulu and they refused, Mr. AJUGA led his team again to go and dispatch butchers from the old market.
But from there, his right hand was chopped off with a panga by unknown butcher.
The Man was immediately rushed to Lacor hospital in Gulu using Boda-boda with only one hand remaining on his body.
When contacted, the LC3 chairperson Omoro town council, Okella Kwoo Walter Lukwia said the town council has a right to relocate traders to the new market.
And he said the old market has been operating on the main street and vendors were getting accident on the street when operating their business.
But Omoro town council business chairperson, Komakech Richard has accused the LC3 chairperson of forcing vendors to go to the new market side which is not even well built, he says the market is still lacking necessary human needs, like toilets, among others.
He said the town council authorities must plan well before opening the new market for business.
The Omoro town clerk, Mr. David Opwonya could not give any comment by press time.
Over the past 2 years when Omoro become a district, Opit market has been operating on the main street without any complaints and it has been accommodating traders from different districts like Lira, Kole, Oyam, Pader, Gulu and Nwoya.
