Suspected thugs on Monday morning broke into the offices of a German Corporation for International Cooperation, Gesellschaftfur Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) in Gulu town and smashed six vehicles, on top of breaking money safe.
The incident happened at around 2:00am at the offices located 1 kilometer along Gulu-Kitgum road.
GIZ offices is located on Samuel Doe road, Iriaga West sub-ward, Iriaga parish, Laroo Division in Gulu Municipality.
GIZ is the implementer of technical cooperation projects of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) working on private sector of Government of Uganda and NGOs on a public benefit basis.
According to Jimmy Patrick Okema, the ploice spokesman for Aswa region, the thugs suspected to be eight in numbers, tied two security guards of Security Group Africa (SGA) with sisal ropes at the entry and beat them up seriously.
“They tied the two guards of Security Group Africa (SGA) with sisal ropes at the entry and beat them up seriously. They then proceeded to the compound where vehicles were packed and destroyed the side screens of six vehicles,” Okema told TND News, Monday.
The two guards identified as David Ayela, 27, injured his both legs and Francis Odongo, 28, injured on the head were rushed to Gulu Victory Clinic for treatment but one Ayela has been discharged after treatment.
After they defeated and tied the guards, Okema added the thugs soon proceeded to the compound where the vehicles were parked and they broke screens of six vehicles belonging to the organization.
He identified the destroyed vehicles as UBB 005Q Nisan Patrol, UBB 683Y Toyota Hilux, UBB 063H Toyota Land Cruiser and UBB 682Y Toyota Land Cruiser Prado. Others include UAZ 703Z Toyota double Cabin Pick UP and a UBB 711K Nissan Patrol.
Police also reported that two money safes belonging to GIZ were opened up by the unknown thugs but it’s not known how much money they walked away with.
Okema says the premises have been cordoned off by police pending re-enforcement of Forensic Experts from Kampala for further management.
The case is registered for investigation under Gulu SD Reference No. 16/27/1/2019.
Okema noted that the two guards didn’t have guns to guards the premises.
“Many NGOs headed by whites do not want their guards to have guns because they believe security management in their countries should be the same in their offices in Uganda situation,” Okema says this is a gap that allows thieves to break into many offices.
“Some organization headed by whites when we ask them to allow their guards to have guns, they deny and this is the disadvantage and it is important that they should allow our normal system to work because we know our Ugandan security situation very well,” Okema cautioned
“We are going to make sure that such gaps are fulfilled,” he added
