The NRM youth and the youth leaders in Acholi sub-region have threatened to defect from the ruling party before 2021 polls over unfulfilled pledges by their national party chairperson, President Museveni Yoweri.
Mr. Museveni who’s also the president of the Republic of Uganda, according to his youth, pledged to support them in 2012.
On Tuesday during a press conference from Northern Uganda Media Club [NUMEC] in Gulu town, the youth leaders from the eight districts in Acholi sub-region, cautioned the president to full fill his pledges that he promised them.
The youth added that in 2012, from president’s Rwakitura home, the NRM chairman pledged to open up a SACCO in the name of Bulu SACCO for Acholi sub region, scholarship for the youth leaders, 70 motor bikes for the SACCO operations and 21 motor bikes to the party youth leaders.
Other pledges were on oxen and ploughs, 40 iron sheets and 100 bags of cement for each of the 240 youth councilors who visited him.
Another executive pledge from the NRM national chairman was to meet cost of the day to day SACCO operations for six months, including paying establishment’s employees salaries for six months, too.
Owacigui Richard – the chairperson Gulu district youth league, doubling as the chairperson youth league Acholi sub-region, told press that: “This is the high time that the president as the chairperson of the party has to equally consider youth of this region by full filling his pledges before 2021 elections.”
He however accused the president, calling him bias to other regions adding: “He is dishing money in other regions forgetting the Acholi. This biasness can tantamount to the loss of the party in 2021 general elections if not addressed.”
Mugisha Richard, a former youth councilor and the current LC5 councilor for Laguti sub-county in Omoro district whom the president pledged during his tenure, said that if the chairman fail to full fill his pledges to youth of this sub-region before 202, “it may force us to defect to other rival – opposition political parties”.
All the youth leaders who attended the Tuesday press conference want to meet the president, in a unanimous decision put before press.
This contemporary online newspaper can reveal that the President is expected in Acholi sub-region in coming weeks and this will be an opportune moment for the beleaguered youth to meet him.
Okello Robinson – the secretary youth league Gulu urged the president to stop pledging, saying that there are very many unfulfilled presidential pledges across the country, asking his national chairman to finish them one by one.
