Gulu: Health workers arrested for stealing gov’t drugs

Two Health center bosses attached to Apera and Pukony health center IIs in Pukony and Unyama sub-counties in Gulu district are being detained at Gulu Central Police Station for allegedly stealing six boxes of Coartem drugs.

 The two suspects were identified as Odong Lot the In-charge of Pukony health center II and Jacob Bongomin, the assistant in charge of Apera health center II.

 The LC5 councilor for Awach sub-county Mr. Christopher Opio Ateke, told our reporter in a telephone interview that the suspects were on Wednesday [this week] caught red-handed with 6 boxes of Coartem drugs by the youth activists.

He added that the activists later paraded the suspects to Awach Police Post where case a file of theft No. Ref: 08/02/01/19 was opened against them.

These suspects were later transferred to Gulu Central Police Station for further interrogations.

Gulu Chief Administrative Officer, Mr. Milton Kato condemned the acts of the officers, adding that the district sat down and gave green light to the Police to do their work, adding “justice should prevail”.

 An effort to get more information from Gulu district Police Commander Emmanuel Mafundo was futile by press time as he was out of office.

 Similarly, the Aswa region police spokesperson, Patrick Jimmy Okema told this online newspaper that he had not received any information about the said arrest.
