LEA, Plan International Uganda committed to promoting local talents

Lango Entertainment Award [LEA] 2018 chapter has ended fruitfully with different talents being awarded.

This years’ fete was bigger on honoring local musicians, radio personalities and creating awareness on the rampant cases of child marriages and teenage pregnancies in the sub-region.

On the theme: “Realizing Lango identity, Zero violence, Zero teenage pregnancies and child marriages”, the conveners and health partner, Plan international Uganda – Lira office  brought different health services to over 3000 people who attended the December, 20 fete.

Daniel Moi who’s the Co-Founder and CEO of Lango Entertainment Award said in his welcome speech that the idea to start LEA was conceived in October, 2016.

He noted that there was “no hope” the idea would turn into an outstanding brand and reaching the 3rd Edition.

All the achievement so far are attributed to the high level of spirited team shown by the entire team behind LEA, different players in the entertainment industry, media houses that is to say radio stations and online news agencies in particular and the entire members of the public who have been of help to us in one way or the other and therefore we remain indebted to them,” the CEO’s speech partly read.

“I would also love to in a special way thank Plan International for accepting to partner with us in organizing the event towards achieving the main theme of Realizing Lango Identity, Zero Violence, Zero Teenage Pregnancies and Child Marriages. We thank you so much for all support you rendered us, however it’s our prayer that this partnership continues to stand the test of time,” he added.

He added: “High People Music Awards which has been an integral part of LEA since its birth has given platform for our artists to be nominated which has then exposed them and their music to a wider market. It is also our prayer that this engagement continues.”

“All the entertainers who have had confidence in us, we encourage you to continue and make this industry grow.

“To the general public and consumers of the entertainment products, we thank you for your continued support to the entertainment industry.

 Outlining some of the achievements since its inception, three years ago, Mr. Moi noted that:

  • Positive competition among actors in different areas of entertainment.
  • Discipline among entertainers.
  • Improved quality in different areas of entertainment.
  • Exposure of our artists and their product all over the country.
  • Promoting young and upcoming entertainers while minding about gender mainstreaming.

Besides the above successes, he outlined some [few] of the challenges below.

  • In adequate finance to handle all intended activities of LEA.
  • Negative attitude from some section of the public.

Future plans of LEA.

  • Capacity building of actors in different areas of entertainment.
  • Sourcing for projects that can improve the livelihood of different actors in the industry.
  • Opening up a SAACO that can be used by the entertainers to better their lives and improve in their performance.
  • Opening and managing a fully operation office for LEA in order for the beneficiaries to easily access help.

Meanwhile, David Onen, Plan International Uganda manager Lira office says Plan International is a child focused institution and ensures girls are able to be in school.

Asked why they opted to partner with LEA at its third edition, he reveals that Lango sub-region continues to face challenges of child marriage, teenage pregnancies and they have realized this young people love music.

“These teens have idols, mentors who are some of these musicians. Some of them are doing positive songs and we are working with local artistes,” he said.

“To us Plan International, LEA 2018 Award was something we could support. We started this in 2016 by engaging individual artistes and B-PEE won. This time we have combined and worked together,” Mr. Onen added, in an interview with this contemporary news website on Sunday morning.

On the continuity of the partnership, Manager Onen revealed that “we love to partner with them” and should they get no bigger sponsor, we will continue to do so.

“It thinks our coming to support them brings them credibility. If they bring bigger sponsors, we may take the health aspect and as long as I’m still manager Plan International, I will continue engaging them” he promised.
