NORTHERN Uganda district of Nwoya has banned commercial charcoal burning whilst setting ablaze more than 3000 bags.
The destruction was done in Alero sub-county after operation was conducted and more than 100 trucks loaded with charcoal and other forest products, including logs were seized.
District leaders say the exercise will protect the environment from disaster like climate change – and also to protect endangered trees.
Led by the district LC5 chairperson – Okello Pryema Patrick – the executive committee late last week launched the operation to flash off commercial charcoal dealers out of the district. Committee members say the business has destroyed natural resources in the area.
Okello Alfred who’s the Nwoya district secretary for production and natural resources says with the launched operation, they have realized drastic reduction of heartless tree cutting and commercial charcoal burning within the district.
“With that operation, the commercial charcoal dealers have started quitting the district for fear of making unnecessary losses that they may incur as their camps are being destroyed as well as the charcoals too,” Okello in an interview with this contemporary news website Tuesday.
Meanwhile, the district LC5 chairperson, Okello Patrick Oryema said as a district they are only going to allow domestic charcoal burning but no more for commercial purposes.
For successful operation that unleashed the illegal dealers, he says the district formed vigilant committee comprising mainly of 20 youth in all the villages.
He added these youth were scouting illegal loggers and commercial charcoal burners and report to the district.
“The operation will further continue in other sub-counties with high number of tree cutting like Got Apwoyo, Lungulu and Koch Goma.
